Revised solemn intercession added to Good Friday liturgy
Bishop Lawrence Persico has made a revision to the Ukraine intercession in the Good Friday liturgy. Please see the attached document. Please note that this is the only added intercession this year.

2023 Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land
Please find attached Bishop Persico’s letter introducing the 2023 Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. In 2020 the Presbyteral Council voted to make this collection a mandatory collection to be taken up sometime during the late Lent or early Easter Seasons. It replaces, in part, the sale of olive wood items, which is now prohibited in the Diocese of Erie. The money from this collection is used to support the work of the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land (Holy Land Franciscans) who have the unique responsibility to care for the Holy Places and the Christians living there. Parishes are asked to publicize this collection in a significant way prior to their collection. Please contact Sr. Kathleen Dietz at kdietz@eriercd.org or 814.824.1126 with any questions.

Liturgy reminders
Because St. Patrick is the patron of the Diocese of Erie, his liturgical celebration on March 17 ranks as a feast everywhere in the diocese. In parish churches that bear his name, the rank would be that of solemnity. See the attached Mass Formulary for these celebrations. Please note that the Gospel you will find in the ORDO is incorrect.

The Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, usually celebrated on March 19, has been transferred to March 20, as the Fourth Sunday of the Lent takes precedence.

Communications Office requests Easter Vigil and Easter Mass times
Easter Vigil and Easter Mass times for all parishes in the Diocese of Erie once again will be available in one place on the diocesan website at www.ErieRCD.org. This makes it easy for anyone to find information about these celebrations at parishes throughout the diocese. The Communications Office requests that parishes send the following information by March 24.

  • Parish name
  • Parish town
  • Parish contact
  • Parish contact email
  • Easter Vigil Mass time
  • Easter Mass time(s)

The goal is to be as welcoming as possible for those who have not been attending Mass regularly or who do not belong to the parish. Please submit the information to Rich Papalia in the Communications Office at rpapalia@eriercd.org.

Catholic Foundation Spring Education Grant deadline is March 20
Have you started your application yet? March 20 is the deadline for Catholic schools, parishes and diocesan departments to apply for spring education grants. Grant requests up to $20,000 are being accepted. Are your parish lay ministers or lay staff planning to attend a conference, workshop or retreat this summer or fall? Are you planning a new religious education or faith formation project for your parish or Catholic school? Is your school or faith formation program in need of updated technology? Your project may be a good fit for the foundation’s education grant opportunity. Review the guidelines and criteria at the following link: https://www.cfnwpa.org/grant-seekers/education-grant-guidelines. This is the first of two Catholic Foundation Education Grant cycles in 2023. Questions? Contact Julia Cooney at 814.824.1253 or jcooney@cfnwpa.org.
