As we journey through Lent in this Holy Year, we are called to deepen our faith, embrace sacrifice and seek God's mercy. This sacred season invites us to grow closer to Christ through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Here are some meaningful ways to observe Lent and experience God’s grace during this special time.

Make a Pilgrimage for a Plenary Indulgence

In this Holy Year, Catholics have a unique opportunity to receive a plenary indulgence by making a pilgrimage to designated sacred sites, including Saint Peter Cathedral in Erie and Saint Leo Magnus in Ridgway.

To receive a plenary indulgence, pilgrims must

At least once during the Holy Year:
  • Receive sacramental confession and absolution
  • Receive Holy Communion

And carry out any of the following:

  • Make a visit to either St. Peter Cathedral, Erie, or St. Leo Magnus Church, Ridgway, to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
  • Visit the sick or others in need.
  • Perform acts of penance for an entire day, such as:
    • Abstain from eating meat
    • Abstain from distractions
    • Abstain from unnecessary consumption of food or drink
    • Perform significant acts of charity:
    • Contribute to the poor
    • Support the homeless, etc.
    • Volunteer a significant amount of time in support of human life and dignity.

One plenary indulgence, for oneself or one deceased, can be received per day.

This pilgrimage is an opportunity to renew your spirit, seek reconciliation and draw nearer to Christ’s mercy. View Bishop Persico’s official decree here.

Fast from Social Media

In today's digital age, constant connectivity can make it difficult to find moments for meaningful prayer and reflection. While we invite you to share your faith through our "Sharing My Faith This Lent" campaign, you can also receive an indulgence by stepping away from social media. Whether for 24 hours or a full week, choose the timeframe that works best for you.

By taking a break from social media, even briefly, you can:

  • Spend more tieme in quiet prayer and scripture reading.
  • Be fully present with your family and loved ones.
  • Reflect on what truly matters in your life.

This Lent, consider both sharing your faith with others and embracing moments of silence and spiritual renewal.

Use this season to reset your heart and mind, making space for God’s voice in your daily routine. Read how you can get a Jubilee indulgence by taking a social media break here.
