Editor’s Notebook (May, 2025)

The realization that we were praying for the Holy Father to share in the mercy and resurrection of Christ gave me comfort as I processed his death. It offered me a way to understand the gravity of the experience while allowing me to dive into my work as a communicator to report on this historic moment.

At the time of printing for this edition, we are uncertain who will become our next pope. It is a meaningful moment in time. This magazine has stories that encourage us to move forward into the unknown. They are about faith, growth and transformation. These themes connect us as we celebrate this Holy Year that Pope Francis proclaimed, the Jubilee of Hope.

You will read about the incredible achievements within our parishes, schools and ministries. This publication of Faith magazine highlights the heart of what makes our Catholic community truly special: our people.

The stories underscore the work being done to teach our children, from the incredible achievements of our coaches like Aaron Straub and his 1,000th win on the court to the dedication of our educators. Everyone works together to cultivate future leaders of faith and compassion, attributes of Pope Francis.

Our parishes are nourished by generous parishioners who support needed church renovations, enhance musical experiences, and help fund outreach. Our pastors continue to share the Gospel and shepherd us through our liturgical year.

This edition also features the voices of our youth, emphasizing the power of making connections through this Holy Year. We recognize the Jubilee of Teenagers, acknowledge Blessed Carlo Acutis and share activities that engage the young and old alike.

The Diocese of Erie’s commitment to providing resources that nurture faith and inspire action is reflected in stories throughout this edition of Faith magazine. These are the stories about our people — including memorial tributes for Pope Francis and our clergy and women religious — who have shaped our community.

Through the pages ahead, we invite you to be inspired by the incredible work within our churches, schools and communities. Together, we continue to build a legacy of faith, love and service — empowered by the strength of our people.
