Commit your work to the Lord and your plans will bee established.”  — Proverbs 16:3

The Diocese of Erie is grateful to the men and women who have not only given their lives to Christ, but also shared their joy, strength and faith with us. It is a pleasure to celebrate and honor our jubilarians who have been guiding lights to the people of the Diocese of Erie for decades.

We recognize that many of the parishes, churches and schools where the clergy and women religious we are honoring worked are now partnered or merged, perhaps renamed, or, in some cases, closed. As we share our esteem for the work of those who served, we have chosen to refer to the parishes and schools where they ministered as they were known at the time of service.

Sister Mary Andrew Himes, RSM

Reflecting on her seven decades as a Sister of Mercy, Sister Mary Andrew Himes says she has enjoyed serving in all of her apostolic placements. “St. Mark Seminary was the place where I served the longest, from 1983 until 2016,” she says. “It was a privilege to have been there.” Sister Mary Andrew also served in several Erie parishes and schools, including St. Andrew and Blessed Sacrament.
Mercyhurst Preparatory School was one of her first placements, where she taught private piano, music appreciation and chorus. In 1993, she began a personal project, St. Joseph Vestments, sewing liturgical vestments for the celebration of Mass. The 20-year task had a two-fold purpose: to provide vestments for her priest brothers and to assist those priests and seminarians with whom she worked.
Sister Mary Andrew entered the Sisters of Mercy from Immaculate Conception Parish in Brookville on September 8, 1954. “I first became really aware of God’s call for me to be a sister while in eighth grade,” she says. “I believe that I was greatly influenced by my family and also by the Sisters of Mercy who were my teachers in grade school. The sisters made a deep impression on me because of their prayerfulness, kindness and humor. They were, as a group, great role models.” She earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Mercyhurst College and a master’s in music education from Duquesne University.
Sister Mary Andrew considers her vocation as a Sister of Mercy to be a blessing. She adds, “I am grateful for all the opportunities for prayer and for the interactions which have brought me into contact with so many.”

A desire to serve the poor and work for peace and justice is what brought Sister Lucia to the Erie Benedictines. She celebrated her final incorporation into the community in 1993.
In Erie, she began working with Emmaus Ministries, eventually becoming the coordinator of the soup kitchen and food pantry. She continued this ministry for 30 years until she retired in 2020, but her love for God’s special ones at Emmaus remains strong.

She and her family attended St. Teresa Parish in Union City.
Of her many early ministries as teacher, principal and administrator, in regional leadership, as finance director at Mercy International Centre in Ireland and as community president, she says, “I was assigned various ministries and many I would probably not have chosen, but all of them offered inspiration and became ‘home’ to me. Those whom we served taught me many life lessons.”
Sister JoAnne says she was led to the Sisters of Mercy “by the collective example of the sisters whom I encountered at Mercyhurst. I recognized their humanness, love of life and the bond of community that existed among them. There seemed to be a deep peace in them that our student antics could not disrupt no matter how hard we tried.”
Sister JoAnne went on to receive certification in mathematics education from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and a master’s in administration and supervision from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Following Erie teaching assignments at St. Luke and St. George schools, she was assistant principal and later president at Mercyhurst Preparatory School.

Father Joseph Staszewski

It was while he was an altar server at Christ the King Parish in Houtzdale that a young Joseph Staszewski first thought about the priesthood, an inkling that led him eventually to six decades as a priest of the Diocese of Erie.
Father Staszewski says he was inspired by the priests he met back then, and by the way they cared for their people. “I felt an attraction to the priesthood,” he recalls. “That attraction grew stronger as the years went by.”
He entered St. Mark Seminary in 1957, later studied at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore and was ordained on May 7, 1964. His early assignments as a parochial vicar — first at St. Bartholomew Parish in Sharpsville and later at Holy Trinity Parish in Erie and Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Farrell — were like an apprenticeship, he says, during which he learned “the tricks of the trade” in running a parish.
Father Staszewski spent a year as a part-time history and theology teacher at Kennedy Catholic High School in 1965-66, and earned a master’s degree in psychology from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Reserve in 1972 and served as a reservist for 28 years.
During his career, Father Staszewski served as pastor of St. Bonaventure Parish, Grampian; St. Joseph Parish, Lucinda; and Immaculate Conception Parish, Brookville. He also served as administrator of St. Mark Parish in Emporium and Christ the King Parish in Houtzdale. Father Staszewski was dean of the DuBois Deanery for nine years until his retirement in 2009. He lives in Houtzdale.

25 YEARS

Very Rev. Michael Ferrick, VF

“What a privilege it has been to serve the people of God these past 25 years,” says Father Michael Ferrick, V.F., rector of St. Peter Cathedral, Erie. “They invite you into their lives at the most important times – births, marriage, death – to give them the Gospel message.”
During his homily at a Mass in May celebrating his anniversary, Father Ferrick said one of the many blessings for a priest is to visit the sick. He told the story of an elderly homebound couple he visits, and about the example they set for him about caring, about patience with each other and about loving relationships. “They do things for others out of love, just as Jesus laid down his life for us out of love,” he said.
The youngest of nine children, he is a native of St. George Parish in Erie. He attended St. George Elementary School, Cathedral Preparatory School and graduated from Gannon University with a bachelor’s degree in arts and humanities. He attended St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where he earned a master of divinity degree and a master of arts degree in Sacred Scripture.
Father Ferrick has served as parochial vicar at St. Gregory Parish in North East, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Erie and at St. Jude the Apostle Parish in Erie. He was pastor of Queen of the World Parish in St. Marys before being named pastor and rector of St. Peter Cathedral in 2013.

He also serves as a judge in the diocesan Tribunal, where he decides marriage annulments.

For all of his 25 years since ordination, Deacon Ralph DeCecco has served as a chaplain at various prisons, a ministry he often does accompanied by his wife of 46 years, Janet.
“We have a very faithful community there,” Janet says of their prison visits, which these days mostly occur at the State Correctional Institution — Albion. “We have Bible studies and retreats, some of the guys get together to say the rosary and we have Mass on Monday nights.”
“My work as a deacon has given me an opportunity to better understand people from all walks of life,” he says, “and to be better able to see the influence of God in our world.”
Deacon DeCecco also serves at St. Andrew’s Parish in Erie. A former industrial salesman, he is now retired. The DeCeccos reside in Erie. They have three children, Jennifer Larimer, Dominick DeCecco and Maria Shuffit, and nine grandchildren.

15 YEARS

Deacon Joseph Cicero

Deacon Joseph Cicero had never considered the diaconate until — while attending a Cursillo weekend — the spiritual director suggested he would make a good deacon. Later, another priest said the same thing. “Through their prompting and my already active parish life at St. John the Evangelist (in Girard),” he says, “my eyes were opened to God’s call.”
Now retired, Deacon Cicero remains active in ministries such as the Maria House Project for men trying to overcome substance abuse and women’s Bible study at his parish. During his active service as a deacon, he spent many years in prison ministry.
Deacon Cicero was born in Erie, graduated from Gannon University in 1974, served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era and worked in manufacturing in the Erie area. He and his wife of 41 years, Betti, who died in 2017, had five children and he has nine grandchildren.
“I try to view any situation not as a crisis, but rather, as an opportunity,” he says. “I want always to be the voice of reason as I help others deal with life’s ups and downs.”

Congratulatory messages

The members of the Gannon University Family congratulate and wish God's continued blessings on Deacon Joseph Cicero on his jubilee anniversary with the Diocese of Erie.

15 YEARS

Deacon Ronald Fronzaglia

Having reached the retirement age for permanent deacons, Deacon Ronald Fronzaglia only wishes he had answered God’s call sooner.
“I wish I would have started my ministry at an earlier age to be of assistance to more of the people of God,” he says.
A lifelong resident of Erie, he grew up a few blocks from Sacred Heart Church, where he and his brothers were altar servers before Vatican II, practicing for many months to learn the Latin responses. A graduate of Cathedral Prep and Gannon College, he did graduate work at Gannon, Edinboro, SUNY-Albany, Temple University, the University of Pittsburgh and at Marywood College in Scranton. He worked as a teacher and administrator in Erie City Public Schools, and later served the diocese as special assistant to the vicar for education.
“I have witnessed parents overjoyed at the baptism of their child, young couples filled with love during their wedding ceremony and families supporting each other at the death of a loved one,” he says. “May God bless all those who are considering vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate or to religious life. They are in need of our prayers and God’s grace.”

Deacon Kevin Kunik

Even from the time he was very young, Deacon Kevin Kunik was thinking about a religious vocation.
“I saw the diaconate as an opportunity to grow closer to Christ through serving others and helping others on their own journeys,” he says.
A native of Erie, he is the husband of Tracy (Motter) Kunik of Oil City and they have four children: Ruthie, Jonah, Katie and Simon. He is assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Erie.
The oldest of seven children, he graduated from Holy Family School and Mercyhurst Prep, earned a bachelor’s degree from Mercyhurst University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Penn State Behrend. He works as a project manager for Erie Insurance.
“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to walk with parishioners and their families by being a part of baptisms, weddings and funerals,” he says. “The aspect of ministry that I have found extremely fulfilling is bringing Communion to those who can no longer attend Mass in person. I have come to experience the presence of Christ in a very profound way in these visits.”
