Embracing Our Mission

In communications and advancement, it can be easy to focus on the work immediately before us — the next story, publication, campaign, event or deadline. Yet none of these efforts exists for its own sake. Our purpose is much greater: to help advance the mission of the Catholic Church.

That understanding shapes how I view the work of our department.

Communications is not simply about sharing information. Through Faith magazine, Diocese of EriE-news, our website and social media, we help people recognize where Christ is at work and invite them into the life of the Church.

Advancement is part of that same mission. Through the Catholic Services Appeal, donor engagement and other opportunities for generosity, we connect people with ministries that reflect their faith and values. Fundraising becomes an invitation to discipleship when people understand the lives their gifts touch.

This mission is evident in the ways we celebrate and support the people who strengthen our diocesan community. Faithful Servants, our online tribute, honors the women religious and clergy who have devoted their lives to serving the Church. During the episcopal transition, we provide timely updates to help the faithful prepare to welcome a new shepherd while Bishop Lawrence Persico continues to lead with faithfulness and wisdom. We also invite the faithful to support this historic moment — and many other important ministries and initiatives that strengthen our diocesan family.

Whether we are telling the story of a parish ministry, helping people navigate change, responding during a difficult moment or thanking those who make our work possible, our role is to build trust, strengthen relationships and bring people closer to the Church’s mission.

When we approach our work in that spirit, communications and advancement become more than professional responsibilities. They become ministry — and one more way we can help the Church encounter, accompany and serve the people of God.
