The Faith Formation Office of the Diocese of Erie hosted its annual confirmation retreat on Saturday, November 9, 2024, in Bradford, where 243 students from 38 parishes came together to prepare their hearts for the sacrament of confirmation. Thanks to a generous grant from the Catholic Foundation and the support of Bishop Lawrence Persico, the retreat was free of charge, providing a meaningful experience that left a lasting spiritual impact on the students.
Jillian Zaczyk, associate executive director of Faith Formation, reflected on the significance of the event: “The diocesan confirmation retreat offers ninth graders a unique opportunity to both encounter and connect. Our prayer is that this is a transformative experience that overflows into their lives, allowing our young people to move beyond a theoretical understanding of their faith and into a personal, lived encounter with Christ. Here, they witness the faith lived out in JOY and discover it as a journey full of meaning and hope, inviting them to be pilgrims of God’s people.”
Damascus Ministries, a missionary movement dedicated to awakening and empowering young Catholics, partnered with the diocese to lead the retreat. Missionaries Milana, Olivia and Conall kicked off the day with worship, igniting an enthusiastic and joyful atmosphere among the youth. The retreat featured three key sessions: “I Am Called/Why Are We Here” led by Milana, “Deeper” led by Conall, and “I Am Sent/Where Do We Go from Here” led by Olivia, which helped students reflect on their spiritual calling and their mission as followers of Christ.
Throughout the day, students were encouraged to be vulnerable and open about their journeys. Brennan, a student, shared how attending a youth summer camp with Damascus made a difference in his life, helping him realize the importance of staying close to Jesus. Other students like Sadie expressed how the retreat inspired them to share God’s love more openly at school. Paul spoke about how the day helped him appreciate his father’s love for his family and how his faith strengthens his relationship with Jesus. Kaylen shared how she felt a heavy burden lift off her shoulders after going to confession, and AJ humorously celebrated his experience with a “fist pump of forgiveness.”
The retreat provided a safe space for students to pray for one another, share struggles, and support each other through tough times. Many stood before their peers to ask for prayers for issues like family challenges, illness or school difficulties, demonstrating vulnerability and a strong sense of community. One of the most moving moments was when students prayed over each other, offering sincere intercessions for those facing hardships.
Prayer was a key focus, as students learned to incorporate it into their daily lives. Kayla shared how she discovered ways to speak with God at school and throughout the day. Others committed to praying in new ways: writing in journals, engaging in praise and worship or simply sending small messages to God about how their day was going. The retreat leaders challenged students with questions like, “How can I be on mission with my family and friends?” and “What will prayer look like when you get home?” These prompts encouraged students to form daily habits of prayer and to live out their faith intentionally.
Bishop Persico concluded the retreat with Mass, reminding everyone in his homily of the call to be more Christ-like. He reflected on the Gospel from Mark, emphasizing, “The gifts we receive help us live our faith and become more Christ-like. In today’s Gospel, we witness the powerful example of the poor widow who offered her last two small coins. What made it religious was that it resembled what Jesus himself would offer on the cross: himself.”
The retreat left students uplifted and spiritually prepared, ready to take the next step in their faith journey through the sacrament of confirmation. They were inspired to put their faith into action and deepen their relationship with God.
