Food, faith and fellowship at OLM Ol’ Mercy Fest

The second annual OLM Ol’ Mercy Fest Food Truck Friday on July 11 felt like the kind of summer evening you hope for all year. The weather was perfect, and the grounds were alive with energy and laughter. Families and friends wandered between four food trucks, each one offering something a little different. The smell of savory barbecue, sweet waffles and sizzling burgers filled the air while live music from The Rooftop Project set a joyful backdrop.
Children bounced gleefully in the inflatable house, shrieking with laughter. The dunk tank had a steady line of brave participants, with cheers erupting each time someone made the perfect throw. Nicole Cillessen brought her two children, Patrick and Annabelle, who had just wrapped up a full day of Vacation Bible School at St. James. Somehow, they still had energy to spare and were completely in their element, dashing between the bouncy house and games.
Judy Manna shared that she came to the event last year and had been looking forward to this one ever since. For her, it was more than just the food and music. It was about the community, the spirit of welcome and connection that wrapped around everyone there. “It’s just a fun evening,” she said with a smile, watching the crowd grow as the sun began to set.
Off to the side, Deacon Paul Barko was mid-game of cornhole when asked what makes this event so special. He didn’t hesitate. “It brings out the younger crowd,” he said. “This is the kind of thing they’re already doing on summer weekends. Live music, food trucks, a relaxed setting. We’re meeting them where they are.” He added that it’s also a chance for couples to grab a sitter and enjoy an affordable night out. “It’s not about raising money. It’s about fellowship and making space for people to just be together.”
Father Matthew Kujawinski offered his gratitude to everyone who played a role in bringing the event to life. “This is what parish life is all about,” he said. “When people come together to create something joyful, welcoming and rooted in community, it strengthens who we are as a parish family. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped make this evening such a success. It means a lot to see our grounds filled with laughter, music and connection.”
The waffles, the sunshine, the music and the spirit of togetherness all worked in harmony to create a beautiful summer memory. A night that reminded everyone that church is not just a building. It’s the people, the joy and the simple moments that bring us closer to one another and to God.
This event is just one of many parish picnics, festivals and celebrations taking place throughout the Diocese of Erie this summer. These gatherings are a joyful way to connect with others, celebrate our faith and strengthen the bonds that make us one family in Christ. Be sure to check your parish bulletin to see if there’s an event happening near you…and don’t miss the opportunity to come together in community, joy and faith.
