Biography


Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Elected to the papacy in 2013, he is the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the first Jesuit pope. Known for his humility, emphasis on mercy and dedication to social justice, Pope Francis has sought to address the challenges facing the modern world, including poverty, inequality and environmental degradation. His papacy is marked by a commitment to reforming the Church and promoting peace and dialogue across different faiths and cultures.
